WHY CHOOSE ENERGY SAVING LIGHT BULBS?

There are many good reasons to switch to energy saving light bulbs. There are a few questions to ask yourself if you are considering the change.

  • Do you want to lower your electricity bills?
  • Do you want to contribute to preserving the environment?
  • Do you want easy replacement of your lights?
  • Do you want longer life for your lights?
  • Do you want reduced glare in your lighting?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of the above, then Energy Savers are for you!

You may try this simple test. Compare two lamps that emit the same amount of light but different amounts of energy (wattage) over the long term of 1,000 hours for each. This cost takes into account the purchase price of the lamp, the cost to operate it, and how long it lasts. If the light you are considering as a replacement gives a lower cost per 1,000 hours, then it’s “enough” to save you money, no matter how much greater its purchase price may be.

Same shine, less wattage
Energy savers save you energy costs while offering similar light output as higher wattage incandescent bulbs. You use less electricity and pay up to 80% less to illuminate your area. Now that is smart saving!

Easy change
Energy savers come in three types E27 (screw type), B22 (pin type) and E14 (small screw type) that fit most conventional fixtures, ensuring hassle-free replacement of bulbs. Energy savers give out less heat making them safer even as bare bulbs, and allowing quicker changing.

Green Lanterns
By reducing demand for electricity, energy savers help preserve the earth’s resources and reduce harmful environmental emissions.

Longer Life
In addition to being flicker free, energy savers come with a minimum of up to 6000 hours lamp life or 3 years regular usage.

Quality
All energy saving products come with an impressive record of quality.

My house uses electric system, 415 volts and 240 volts

For the low voltage electric system of our local houses use two common voltage levels which are 415 volts and 240 volts. How to check and measure the voltage 415/240 volts?

We can have visual inspection on how many wires of the electric system.

“3 wires” mean 240 volts. The wires is a combination of 1 no. of phase wire, 1 no of neutral wire and 1 no of earth wire. Sometimes, we may call it “single phase”.

“5 wires” are 415 volts. The wires is a combination of 3 nos. of phase wires, 1 no of neutral and 1 no. earth wire.

voltmeter chriscl

After the visual inspection, we will use the multimeter to measure the voltage. Switch the multimeter to voltmeter. See the photo, the red circle is voltmeter. Then, put the tip of the red probe and black probe across on two (2) wire terminals. You will read the output in volts.

In conclusion, you have learnt the low voltage system for residential housing, 415/240 volts are common voltage levels, conduct visual inspection and use the voltmeter for measurement.

How to check the capacity of air conditioner?

In previous post, we discuss the energy saving of electric appliances. How to check the loading unit of the air conditioner? The answer can be found on the NAMEPLATE mounted on the air conditioner. air conditioning nameplate

Look at the picture shown. You can get the useful data on nameplate.

Do you note the RED circle? We calls it Current (amperes) and Voltage (Volt).

Use this formula,

Power = Current X Voltage

Power = 40 x 120

= 4800 Watt.

This is simple calculation done in couple second. Once you master it, you can start to compare the air conditioning you wish to buy.

It’s good thing to use the energy saving appliances that will bring lower power consumption and protect our Earth.

Tips to lightening our energy bill

One of the easiest way to save your bill is choosing the energy efficient appliances. Although it may incur slightly more initial cost, the saving will pay back over a period of time.

Secondly, we can reduce the frequent use with little adjustment on collecting clothes with full load wash.

Thirdly, the life of appliances will prolong if second habit is maintained.

Here are some examples of wise habit of saving our bill.

air conditioner1) Air Conditioner

Don’t: Use 1 hp air conditioner with a load rating of 950W.

Do : Select 1 hp air conditioner with a load rating of 850W.

washing machine2) Washing machine

Don’t: Daily wash is done on partial load wash is $0.18 x 7 = $1.26

Do : Washing three (3) times of full load wash per week is $0.18 x 3 = $0.54

chest freezer3) Refrigerator

Don’t: Set the temperature of the refriegerator on -21C.

Do : Adjust the temperature of the refrigerator to -18C.

4) Televisiontv

Don’t: Standby mode will consume our bill.

Do : Switch off power supply of TV after use.

saving bulb5) Lighting

Don’t: Use 60W bulb

Do : Replace with Energy Saving bulb

I wish the above will give you tips for energy efficient and saving. Have a nice day!

Why my extension socket outlet was blown out and the circuit breaker tripped off?

overload_burnt_plugMy colleague raised this question to me last week. She said, “I connect all electric kettle, rice cooker and washing machine together. The power was off immediately when I switched on the electric appliances.” She continued, “A burnt smell and brown mark could be seen on the extension socket.” Luckily, the electric appliance was not damaged and no injured to people. However, she got to buy new extension cable.

Does above problem sound familiar to you? This symptom is called OVERLOAD in electric circuit.

Secret of OVERLOAD revealed here.

Each circuit has the maximum capacity of the current carrying to the electric appliance. In simple word, too many electrical appliances connected to a socket outlet will cause this overload problem.

Perhaps you will trip and black out your house and can be reset. If it doesn’t trip and overloading prolongs unknowingly, the insulation of cables will deteriorate and conductors produce losses in heat. It may cause fire too. This considers unsafe act and energy waste.socket outlet overload

In my opinion, the electric appliance can be classified to Heavy Load and Light Load.

For examples:

1) Heavy Load

Air conditioning, water heater, electric stove, discharged lamp, washine machine, refrigerator, monitor, television, high power amplier.

2) Light Load

Fluorescent lamp, bulb, table fan, computer, radio, dvd\ vcd\ cd player, handphone charger.

Solution to avoid OVERLOAD

1) Always apply one electric appliance to one socket outlet if possible. However, 3 nos of light load can be add up to one socket outlet.

2) Take advice from competent electrician if you wish to extend more appliances. Perhaps, this requires additional consumer distribution board for long term usage.

3) For temporary usage, I also recommend you to check the loading calculation with electrician.

In conclusion, we shall always consider minimum loading of each socket outlet for safety purpose and fully occupied energy and material usage.

Why Worry About Electricity?

electric shock

Let us look at a report from National Safety council, US.

Electrocutions rank FOURTH (9%) in causes of industrial FATALITIES (behind traffic, violence and construction).  The National Safety council estimates 600 people die every year of electrical causes.  Most of these accidents involve low voltage (600 volts or less). How about your place?

Roughly 3,600 disabling electrical contact injuries occur every year in the United States, along with another 4,000 non-disabling injuries.

Effects on your body (see the chart):

A small night-light with a 6-watt bulb draws .05 ampere, and even that small amount of current can be fatal.  Here are some effects of current (in milli amps) passing through a 150 pound body (note that perception is only .5 to 1.5 milli amps):

Effects of electrical shock on your body

Electricity is an integral part of today’s modern world, and sometimes it is easy to forget just how dangerous it can be.  Given the correct circumstances, it can kill.  But it can also shock you painfully, damage sensitive equipment, and ignite combustible materials.

Hence, my friend learns more electrical knowledge will keep you away from electric shock. Have a good day.
