Why my extension socket outlet was blown out and the circuit breaker tripped off?

overload_burnt_plugMy colleague raised this question to me last week. She said, “I connect all electric kettle, rice cooker and washing machine together. The power was off immediately when I switched on the electric appliances.” She continued, “A burnt smell and brown mark could be seen on the extension socket.” Luckily, the electric appliance was not damaged and no injured to people. However, she got to buy new extension cable.

Does above problem sound familiar to you? This symptom is called OVERLOAD in electric circuit.

Secret of OVERLOAD revealed here.

Each circuit has the maximum capacity of the current carrying to the electric appliance. In simple word, too many electrical appliances connected to a socket outlet will cause this overload problem.

Perhaps you will trip and black out your house and can be reset. If it doesn’t trip and overloading prolongs unknowingly, the insulation of cables will deteriorate and conductors produce losses in heat. It may cause fire too. This considers unsafe act and energy waste.socket outlet overload

In my opinion, the electric appliance can be classified to Heavy Load and Light Load.

For examples:

1) Heavy Load

Air conditioning, water heater, electric stove, discharged lamp, washine machine, refrigerator, monitor, television, high power amplier.

2) Light Load

Fluorescent lamp, bulb, table fan, computer, radio, dvd\ vcd\ cd player, handphone charger.

Solution to avoid OVERLOAD

1) Always apply one electric appliance to one socket outlet if possible. However, 3 nos of light load can be add up to one socket outlet.

2) Take advice from competent electrician if you wish to extend more appliances. Perhaps, this requires additional consumer distribution board for long term usage.

3) For temporary usage, I also recommend you to check the loading calculation with electrician.

In conclusion, we shall always consider minimum loading of each socket outlet for safety purpose and fully occupied energy and material usage.

Why Worry About Electricity?

electric shock

Let us look at a report from National Safety council, US.

Electrocutions rank FOURTH (9%) in causes of industrial FATALITIES (behind traffic, violence and construction).  The National Safety council estimates 600 people die every year of electrical causes.  Most of these accidents involve low voltage (600 volts or less). How about your place?

Roughly 3,600 disabling electrical contact injuries occur every year in the United States, along with another 4,000 non-disabling injuries.

Effects on your body (see the chart):

A small night-light with a 6-watt bulb draws .05 ampere, and even that small amount of current can be fatal.  Here are some effects of current (in milli amps) passing through a 150 pound body (note that perception is only .5 to 1.5 milli amps):

Effects of electrical shock on your body

Electricity is an integral part of today’s modern world, and sometimes it is easy to forget just how dangerous it can be.  Given the correct circumstances, it can kill.  But it can also shock you painfully, damage sensitive equipment, and ignite combustible materials.

Hence, my friend learns more electrical knowledge will keep you away from electric shock. Have a good day.

Hello, I just setup the blog ; D!

chriscldotcomReally happy that I can setup this blog today although it’s midnight now. I think this is a good kick off day which I’ve been thinking for long time.

My objective to setup this blog is to share about the electrical guide with you. I wish you can benefit from this blog and be aware of the electrical safety, installation, testing and inspection since we are surrounded by electrical appliances everyday whether starts from the small handphone chargers to big refrigerators and air-conditioning.

Briefly introduce myself that I have been involved in the electrical work for 8 years with holding a qualified and competent licensed of Electrical Supervisor with local government for the installation work and authorize to test.

Currently, I am working with KL consultant firm as Mechanical & Electrical Engineer for industry and commercial building dealing with gas pipeline, air-conditioning system, fire fighting system, cold & hot water system, sanitary & plumbing system. This new job really broadens my eyes.

So, stay in tune my friend and keep in touch. Have a nice day!
